The Monumental Complex of San Giovanni

Where once stood the mighty walls of a Norman-Swabian castle, today stands one of the most fascinating cultural complexes in Calabria.

The history of this extraordinary place begins back in 1070, when Robert Guiscard, the legendary Norman leader, chose this strategic location to build a fortress that would dominate the valley for centuries.
The fate of the medieval castle took a dramatic turn in the fifteenth century: its ancient stones, full of memories, were not lost but found new life in the construction of the church of San Giovanni in 1532.
A perfect example of how Calabrian architecture knows how to reinvent itself, transforming the remnants of military power into places of spirituality.
The seventeenth century brought a new transformation: in 1663, on the remains of the castle, the Carmelite Fathers built their convent, creating an oasis of contemplation where once the footsteps of soldiers resounded.
But the vocation of this site to reinvent itself did not stop there: the nineteenth century saw the rise of a hospital, a barracks of the Military Engineering Corps, and the prisons of the Royal Audience, testimonies of an era when the complex still served the community, albeit in different forms.
A dramatic event in 1970 - the collapse of the ancient castle walls on Via Carlo V - seemed to mark the end of this long history.
Instead, it was the beginning of a new chapter.
On December 18, 1998, with an exhibition dedicated to Andrea Cefaly, the master of nineteenth-century Calabrian painting, San Giovanni began its metamorphosis into a prominent cultural space.
The following year, the exhibition dedicated to the "Calabrian Knight" definitively established the complex as one of the most prestigious exhibition venues in the South.
