Descrizione attrazione
In the heart of the city, overlooking the central Piazza Matteotti, stands one of the most emblematic school buildings in Catanzaro: the ITIS Ercolino Scalfaro, born as the seat of the ancient School of Arts and Crafts. Construction work began in 1905, but was repeatedly interrupted by the devastating earthquakes that struck Calabria in 1905 and 1908. Despite the difficulties, the building was completed and inaugurated in 1912, marking an important moment for technical education in the region.
The architectural design of the building is dominated by a dramatic facade in triumphant eclectic style, which constitutes its distinctive element. The decorative bas-relief details tell the educational vocation of the structure: symbolic figures stand out such as the worker bee — emblem of industriousness and discipline — and allegories of technical professions, which embellish the upper part of the facade.
In 1929, the school was named after Lieutenant Ercolino Scalfaro, a young man from Catanzaro who heroically fell during the First World War, whose name is now closely linked to the identity of the institute.
An important expansion took place in 1948, with the addition of a floor and the construction of a majestic internal staircase, connecting the monumental atrium to the upper floors. This intervention, well integrated into the original architecture, has conferred further solemnity and functional value to the building.
Even today, the ITIS Scalfaro represents a point of reference for technical and professional training, but it is also an interesting example of educational architecture from the early twentieth century, capable of combining aesthetics and public function.
