Descrizione attrazione

Hidden among the elegant lines of the historic center of Catanzaro, Palazzo Di Tocco tells the story of three noble families and an entire era. Built in the 19th century, the building has gone through different phases of ownership — first the Marincola family, then the Alemanni, and finally the Di Tocco — and has undergone recent restoration interventions that have enhanced its original architectural imprint, giving it the right urban prominence. The building stands out for its ability to gracefully adapt to the significant height difference between the two facades, maintaining a harmonious balance between shapes and proportions. The entrance portal, in a corner position, is one of its most fascinating peculiarities: designed in a late Renaissance style, it stands out as a cornerstone of the facade, clad in simple faux rustication. This stylistic choice gives the entire complex a stern and solemn appearance, emphasized by a refined architectural design that highlights the elegant pilasters. Above the portal, an elaborate decorative apparatus captures the eye: the cornice, carefully sculpted, frames an apotropaic mask depicting the head of a lion — a symbol of strength and protection. To crown the ensemble, a sunken segmental pediment, adorned with stone festoons supporting a shield with a fierce lioness head: an iconographic detail rich in symbolic and heraldic meanings. Palazzo Di Tocco is more than a noble residence: it is a must-visit for those who wish to grasp the understated elegance and historical identity of 19th-century Catanzaro.
