Politeama Theater: where architecture becomes music In the heart of the historic center of Catanzaro, in via Jannoni, stands one of the city's most refined architectural gems: the Politeama Theater.

This extraordinary building, designed by the master Paolo Portoghesi (1931-2023), represents not only a temple of the performing arts but also a masterpiece of contemporary Italian architecture that has been able to reinterpret theatrical tradition with innovative languages and revolutionary spatial solutions. Paolo Portoghesi: the master of postmodern architecture Paolo Portoghesi, who passed away in May 2023, was one of the most influential figures in Italian architecture of the late 20th century. A postmodern theorist, refined critic, and visionary designer, Portoghesi was able to combine tradition and innovation, creating works that engage with history without sacrificing contemporaneity. The Politeama Theater in Catanzaro represents one of his most mature achievements, where a deep knowledge of Italian theatrical tradition merges with avant-garde spatial research. The collaboration with the engineer Franco Portoghesi for the design of structures and systems ensured the work a perfect synthesis between artistic vision and technical functionality. Urban rebirth: from market to temple of the arts The new theater is located in the area resulting from the demolition of the old Politeama from the thirties and the contemporary market, in an urban redevelopment operation that has radically transformed this area of the historic center. The choice to maintain the name "Politeama" pays homage to the city's theatrical memory, creating an ideal continuity between past and future. This urban planning operation demonstrates how it is possible to transform degraded or underutilized areas into new cultural hubs, restoring vitality and prestige to the historic center through investments in culture and the arts. Architecture that sings: the horseshoe-shaped hall With its 53,000 cubic meters of volume and 5,700 square meters of surface area, the Politeama Theater is developed around a hall with a traditional horseshoe shape, reinterpreted with contemporary sensitivity. The 500 square meters of the hall represent an acoustically designed space down to the smallest detail to ensure an optimal sound experience at every point. #The undulating parterre: innovation in tradition One of the most innovative solutions of the project is represented by the parterre, which accommodates 372 spectators on a surface that "follows an undulating movement on an almost concave surface." The 18% slope is not only a functional choice to ensure visibility but becomes an expressive element that transforms the audience into a sort of natural amphitheater.
