This giant of reinforced concrete, affectionately called "Ponte Morandi" by the people of Catanzaro, is not just an infrastructure: it has become the very symbol of the city, an icon that tells of ambitions, technical challenges, and the human ability to transform necessity into beauty. The genius of Riccardo Morandi Behind this marvel of engineering lies the visionary mind of Riccardo Morandi (1902-1989), one of the greatest structural engineers of the twentieth century. When he designed the viaduct in Catanzaro in 1962, Morandi was already famous for his bold works that elegantly defied the laws of gravity. His revolutionary approach was to combine functionality and aesthetics, transforming reinforced concrete structures into true architectural sculptures. For Catanzaro, Morandi conceived a work that had to solve a practical problem - avoiding the tortuous access route to the city - but he did so with an extraordinarily audacious solution: a single arch with a span of 231 meters, which at the time of construction was the second largest in the world in terms of width after the Swedish bridge Sandöbron. Catanzaro, perched on its three hills, had always suffered from accessibility problems. The old entrance route to the city was winding and inadequate for the needs of modern traffic. Morandi's bridge solved this problem with a stroke of genius: instead of bypassing the river, it crossed it with a bold leap that turned a geographical obstacle into an architectural opportunity.
