Mazzini, in the heart of Catanzaro, the right facade of the Post Office building houses one of the most important examples of public art in post-war Italy: the "Mural" created by Mimmo Rotella. This large polymaterial work, created by the artist from Catanzaro between the late 1950s and the early 1960s, occupies the space where the Real San Francesco Theater once stood, nicknamed "San Carlino" for its similarities to the famous Teatro San Carlo in Naples and demolished in 1938. Mimmo Rotella and Nouveau Réalisme Mimmo Rotella (1918-2006), among the key figures of European art in the twentieth century and one of the most well-known exponents of Nouveau Réalisme, was the creator of the "poetics of tearing." Famous worldwide for his décollage technique - which involves taking advertising posters from urban walls to dismantle, tear, and reassemble them in new compositions - Rotella introduced an original reflection on the language of the street and the communicative power of exhausted material, consumed by time. A narrative of progress Rotella's "Mural" decorates the wall of the post office building with a lively bas-relief where, among abstract surfaces and geometric shapes, details emerge that tell the story of the evolution of communications: letter envelopes, telegraphs, keyboards, keys, carrier pigeons, telephones. This material mosaic thus becomes a visual synthesis of the transition from traditional postal means to modern technologies, celebrating the human ingenuity that has made possible the connection between cities, people, and worlds. Rotella's visual language, which anticipates many of the typical suggestions of Pop Art, transforms the rationalist facade of the building into an urban canvas, ideally connecting the memory of the Real San Francesco Theater - a place of culture and civic gathering - to the idea of Catanzaro as a crossroads of stories and communications. An icon of the contemporary city Today, the "Mural" is a reference point of Catanzaro's urban identity: a work that summarizes the city's ambition to be modern and open to the new, but without forgetting its roots and the social function of its institutions. By looking at this large panel, both the people of Catanzaro and visitors can rediscover the stages of a silent revolution that has changed the way communities exist, celebrated by the creativity of an artist who has been able to bring the vitality of the street into the symbolic places of the city's memory.

“Mural” by Mimmo Rotella: public art and postal memory In via G.
